Duration: 8–10 Weeks | Level: Certificate Professional Foundation Standard

Course Introduction

Accounting and bookkeeping remain among the most consistently valuable, transferable skills in any economy every business, NGO, government department, and cooperative needs someone who can record transactions accurately, produce reliable financial statements, and provide the financial information decision-makers depend on. In Zambia specifically, competent bookkeepers and accounting technicians are in demand across SMEs (which often cannot yet afford a fully qualified accountant but need accurate books), NGOs (which face rigorous donor financial reporting requirements), and as a genuine stepping stone into professional accounting careers.

This certificate is built to the same foundational knowledge areas covered in the early stages of internationally recognized professional accounting qualifications such as ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and similar bodies double-entry bookkeeping, the accounting equation, ledger accounts, trial balances, financial statement preparation, adjustments, control accounts, and bank reconciliations taught with the same rigor and worked-example depth you would expect from a professional foundation-level course, not a simplified overview.

An Important Note on Professional Accreditation

This certificate is designed to build genuine, rigorous competence aligned with ACCA’s foundational syllabus content (broadly comparable to ACCA’s Applied Knowledge level topics, such as Business and Technology, Management Accounting, and Financial Accounting fundamentals). However, it is important to be transparent: this certificate is awarded by Cullen University College and does not itself confer ACCA membership, exemptions, or any official ACCA qualification – ACCA qualifications are only awarded by ACCA directly, through their own registration, examinations, and membership process. What this certificate does provide is a genuinely strong, practically applied foundation that will make later ACCA, CIMA, ZICA, or university accounting study significantly more accessible — many concepts you master here will appear again, in more advanced form, in those pathways. Module 10 provides specific guidance on how to take this foundation forward into formal professional qualification if that is your goal.

Course Content

Module 1: The Accounting Equation & Foundations of Accounting
Introduction to Module 1 Every concept in this certificate ultimately traces back to one foundational relationship: the accounting equation. This module builds a precise, rigorous understanding of this equation and the broader purpose and users of accounting information.

  • The Accounting Equation & Foundations of Accounting

Module 2: Double-Entry Bookkeeping & the Ledger System
Introduction to Module 2 This module builds the actual mechanical skill of double-entry bookkeeping the disciplined recording system that keeps the accounting equation in balance for every single transaction, no matter how complex the business becomes.

Module 3: Books of Prime Entry & Control Accounts
Introduction to Module 3 In practice, transactions are not recorded directly into ledger T-accounts one at a time they first pass through specialized "books of prime entry" that organize transactions by type before posting to the ledger. This module also introduces control accounts, a critical accuracy-checking tool.

Module 4: The Trial Balance & Correction of Errors
Introduction to Module 4 This module covers extracting a trial balance the critical checkpoint confirming (though not guaranteeing) that double-entry bookkeeping has been applied correctly and how to identify and correct the errors that inevitably occur in practice.

Module 5: Preparing Financial Statements – Income Statement & Statement of Financial Position
Introduction to Module 5 This module brings together everything built so far into the core professional output of accounting: a complete set of financial statements prepared from a trial balance.

Module 6: Year-End Adjustments — Accruals, Prepayments, Depreciation & Bad Debts
Introduction to Module 6 Financial statements prepared directly from an unadjusted trial balance are rarely fully accurate this module covers the essential year-end adjustments required to ensure financial statements genuinely reflect a business's true financial performance and position, following the fundamental accruals concept: income and expenses should be recorded in the period they relate to, not simply when cash changes hands.

Module 7: Bank Reconciliation & Cash Control
Introduction to Module 7 Cash is the asset most vulnerable to error, theft, and timing differences between a business's own records and the bank's records. This module builds the essential skill of bank reconciliation and broader cash control practice.

Module 8: Zambian VAT, PAYE & Statutory Compliance for Bookkeepers
Introduction to Module 8 Beyond core bookkeeping technique, a genuinely employable Zambian bookkeeper must understand the statutory compliance obligations they will be expected to help manage VAT, PAYE, and NAPSA and how these are correctly recorded in the accounting system.

Module 9: Financial Statement Analysis & Ratios
Introduction to Module 9 Producing accurate financial statements is only valuable if the resulting information can be meaningfully interpreted. This module builds the skill of calculating and interpreting core financial ratios moving from bookkeeping technician toward genuine financial analysis competence.

Module 10: Professional Ethics & Pathways to Further Qualification
Introduction to Module 10 This final module addresses the ethical foundation every accounting professional must uphold, and provides a clear, honest roadmap for taking the strong foundation built in this certificate forward into further professional accounting qualification.
